3 Ways To Work From Home In Your Spare Time

It seems like the economy is on everyone's mind. The world wide struggle to make ends meet is constant.  Pandemic recovery and wars raging in foreign lands are breeding inflation, food shortages and fuel issues. The fear of being able to afford to make it through a long hard winter is real and can really get you down.

There are ways to give your income a boost and help you get through. These 3 income makers can be added to your 9 to 5 job easily.

1.  Crafting. I have been doing a lot of this myself. Yes, money is tight, but making things from scrap wood has been getting me a few extra bucks to finish out the end of the month. Working with wood and paint has been a little like therapy for me and it allows me to release my creative side. It is something you can do in your spare time at your own pace where the only deadline is the one that you make. It doesn't have to be woodworking, it can be sewing, painting, drawing, etc. Create and keep it or open up an Etsy shop or Facebook sell it.

2. Cooking or Baking. This can also be therapeutic.  Some people enjoy a home cooked meal but simply don't have time. Hire out your helping hands, recipes and ingredients.  Ready made meals that are home-cooked beat store bought anytime. If you are making food for yourself, make an extra and offer it to someone who seems to be working nonstop and has no time to cook, for a small fee.

3. Find a small online or phone job that you can do in your off time. There are many small companies looking for people to handle their social media accounts or phone customer service. Do you like to talk? There are a lot of those jobs too!

Yeah, I know these don’t sound like much, but sometimes all you need is just a little extra for a little while. Give them a try, see if you like them. Who knows? You might be able to make a decent go of it. Or you may be able to get rid of some stress and help someone else out at the same time.

New House Tour and Cleaning

As some of you may know, I recently moved to a new and smaller house. It's always fun getting to decorate a new place and put your own personal touches on it.

Unfortunately, the new place not only needed decorating but a good cleaning. Smaller spaces, turns out, are easier to mess up. Who knew? So here is a brief tour of the kitchen and living room before and after mess. Enjoy!

Moving!

How fun is moving? NOT! It is not fun at all. As a matter of fact, I absolutely detest it. But alas it is time to move on from this little house that we have grown to know and love to better and more economical things. The thought of packing, however, turns my stomach into a raging monster and overwhelms my brain like nothing else can.

First, comes the packing, assuming you can find boxes. Then, comes the cleaning. Of course, the moving comes next along with more cleaning and finally, the unpacking and disposing of the previously mentioned boxes. I am one of those people that can't live in a place with boxes in it so, everything will have to be put away before I can relax into the new place. It's craziness!

Yes, there is the initial excitement of the possibilities of the new place. Believe me, it is there for me. I can't wait to decorate and make it my own. Making sure everything has its own place and compliments the home is fun to me, but it can still be very overwhelming.

Also, I have to make sure that my son is comfortable in the new place and that he has a space that he can relax and enjoy. Change can be hard for kids and though I believe this move will help him more than hurt him, he is not so sure. We have been in this house for nearly eight years so he has spent the majority of his little life here. I can only imagine how daunting a move must be for him. But fortunately, he will be in the same school district which may alleviate some of the anxiety about the move and he will live closer to his best friend.

All in all, I think this is a great move for us. Time will tell. But for now, I have to pack all these boxes. GRRRR!

Nearly Empty Nesting

This is what we prepare them for, right? We raise our children to be responsible and productive adults so that they can make their own way in the world. Why is it so hard to let go?

How did they grow up so fast?

My daughters recently moved into an apartment together just thirty miles from home. Yes, they have moved out before. One moved to a different state for four years and the other into an apartment on her own. But years after they moved out, they came back. For the past five years, my oldest daughter has been living with me. The youngest lived with my ex-husband who was generous enough to take her in. She was seven blocks away so it was like having them both at home.

Now they are gone again.

Obviously, I am happy that I had a part in raising two beautiful well adjusted young women. Indeed, I am the proud mom. It was very hard to let go even though they are in their twenties. Part of me wants to keep them close forever and keep them as safe as possible. But the other part says that it is time for them to spread their wings and fly the way they were meant to. That and wouldn't it be nice to not have to share a room with my nine year old son for a change. Yes, I do still have a nine year old son to keep me company and now can devote more attention to his needs. They are all my babies and we as parents spend so much time protecting them. We forget that eventually they leave the nest and try the the things they have learned from us. They will make mistakes and learn from them as they always have.

Though they are only thirty miles away, I will be a mom that worries after them forever. I can't help it! So for now, I will enjoy the freedom of having a girly bedroom instead of a toy infested nine year old boys play room. And, I will watch from afar as the two oldest take the steps to make lives for themselves away from the shelter of mom. I miss them already! :(

My Top 5 Things I Wouldn't Want To Be Without

I recently watched a video or two on YouTube with the subject heading of Five Things I couldn't Live Without. I'm not into designer bags or trendy fashion accessories but there are somethings in my life that I would never want to be without. Here they are!

  1. A Great Friend and Family Support System I love my family and friends and without them I would be nothing. No we don't always get along and sometimes we even hurt each other but we know someone always has our back.
  2. An Automobile Yeah, this is something we take for granted at times but when we don't have one, we feel trapped and isolated. Mine is a 98 Dodge Caravan. It is a rust bucket and is about to turnover 200,000 miles but it still starts every morning.
  3. A Roof Over My Head and Food In Our Bellies Another of the things we take for granted, but there are too many people without these luxuries. During this time of year, I speak of Winter, I have a warm place to lay my head and shelter for my children. We have food. Yes' I complain about the rent and the price of food, but it is truly a small price to pay.
  4. My Babies Okay, I'm getting sappy, I know. My kids are my life and without them I would be lost. It is a lot of work raising kids but I, like many of you, wouldn't trade it for anything. They are 100% worth every effort.
  5. My Faith In God Faith has gotten me through the most horrible times in my life. Without God in my life things would have fallen apart long ago. This is one thing that my mother gave me at a very young age and to this day I thank her. It is what made her a strong woman and He continues to do the same for me.

This is an unconventional Top 5 but these things are what make my life easier and worth living. Take stock of your Top 5 Things That You Would Not Want To Be Without today!

How Do I Get Motivated To Clean? Youtube!

We all have those days when it seems impossible to get motivated to clean. Sometimes it is like a tedious and thankless job that never seems to end. So, you want some help with motivation?

My favorite way to motivate myself to clean, other than the fact that I can't stand the chaos anymore or someone is coming over at the last minute, is to watch other people clean. No, I don't spy on my neighbors. I'm not a window peeper! For this and other important things there is YouTube! That's right, people actually like to record and display themselves on the internet while cleaning their homes.

Now I know it may sound a little voyeuristic to want to see others cleaning on YouTube, but try it. Often they have tips on how to clean things better, faster, and safer than you would normally be able to do. Take those pots and pans, for instance, that you just can't get clean. Or that greasy nasty stove top that you can't seem to get the burnt on grease off from, they can show you how to do it.

To get the whole house done, just type in "daily cleaning routine". You will see some very busy women, sometimes men, scrubbing away at their messy homes, sometimes in fast forward and while caring for their little ones, and telling you quick and easy tips they have picked up doing it.

No, I am not crazy. Try sitting in front of the computer for about 20 minutes, just watching others clean. Pretty soon, you are gonna want to get up and clean something. It works every time for me. I have learned a lot from watching other creators including new cleaning products and new ways of cleaning to make things faster, more efficient, and easier.

What have you got to lose? A messy house? Fifteen minutes? Give it a shot, you may be surprised how well it works

8 Tips To Keep Your Home Warm That Hardly Anyone Thinks Of

Here are 8 tips to conserve heat in your home.

  1. Close your cupboards. Believe it or not, the cupboards underneath your sink may leak a lot of cold air. This is because they are not heated, usually up against outer walls, and may not be insulated very well. So keep them cupboards closed as much as possible.
  2. Along with keeping your cupboards closed comes keeping unused areas in your home closed that don't have heating vents or have closed heating vents. Close your shower door. It is a space that does not need to be heated unless you are using it.
  3. Open your curtains in the morning. Take advantage of the sun while it is up on those sunny days. Any amount of heat you can let in that is free is a good thing.
  4. If you have an enclosed porch, don't forget to seal those windows as well. Lessening the amount of cold air that comes into the door when you open it saves a lot on your bills.
  5. Plastic plugs for your outlets. Chances are that you have outlets in your home that you are not using. Plug them, especially true when your outlets are on walls that are on the outer frame of your home. Get the little plastic plug covers, they work great.
  6. Finally, consider baking and when you are finished, turn off the oven but leave the door partially open. Let that heat out. (watch your little ones though). Also, consider using your Crock-Pot, it throws off quite a bit of heat and is on for a good portion of the day if you put it on low to cook a meal. It also takes up less electricity than your oven and furnace.
  7. Put something at the bottom of your doors to stop drafts from coming in. Doors and windows are top cold air leak areas in your home. Even if it is just a rolled up rug or towel, after you close your doors tightly, overlap a rug on the bottom of the door. It can make a huge difference.
  8. Use your deadbolts. A lot of times when you use the deadbolt locks on your outside doors, the door is pulled closer to the frame and seals better.
Try these tips out. I hope they save you some cash and keep you warmer in your home.

My Top 5 Ways To Bring A Pleasant Scent To Your Home

Along with store bought spray scents, there are many other options for getting the scent that you want in your home that may not seem obvious. Here are my top 5 ways to make your house smell amazing!

  1. Do you have a candle that you just absolutely love the scent of but it just doesn't burn right, stay lit, or is down to the lowest point on the wick? Try the electric candle warmer. I bought one about two months ago, and I swear it is the best purchase made in a long time. It warms the wax in the candle to get every last bit of scent out from it and the smell is stronger than just burning the candle. Not to mention that a candle warmer is safer than an open flame. Still make sure to place it where the heat cannot damage anything or that can't be a fire hazard.
  2. You can also use that candle warmer for your Scentsy or store bought waxes. It works just as well and does not require an expensive burner. I paid less than $7 for a candle warmer. Make sure to put it in an empty candle grade glass that can withstand the heat.
  3. Yes, we go back to the candle warmer for laundry scent boosters. This is a very effective way of making your home smell fresh and clean. I use Purex Crystals but I know some use Downy Unstopables which are just as scented. These options tend to last longer and fill the room faster with the scent you want. I use crystals because they are extremely easy to clean from the container used to warm them.  As in above, make sure to use a glass that can withstand the heat.
  4. DIY Potpourri in a small pot on your stove is a great option also. There are several variations to DIY Potpourri. Here is mine: DIY Potpourri: Re-Purposing Over Ripe Apples . This is a refreshing option that uses things that you may already have at home. It is done on the stove top. Just remember to keep it at lowest heat and replenish the water frequently.
  5. This is one of my favorites! COOKING or making COFFEE! I love my Crock-Pot. The smell of the food fills the house and you get a warm meal at the end of the day. What can be better than that? Do some baking! Nothing yummier than the smell of bread baking or cookies or cakes. (Gotta stop with that, It's 6:15 in the morning and I'm starving!) The rewards are endless with this option and it makes your home smell fantastic. In a time crunch with unexpected visitors? Make some coffee, your home will smell great and you have something to serve your guests.
Give some of these a try, your home will smell great! As always, be safe when using heat for your scent options. Enjoy!

Coffee Chat: Recovering From Time Away From Home (Before and After)

Everyone goes through this. You have one or two days where you can't spend much time at home. All you have time to do is to get ready in the morning or drop things on the way in to get ready for bed. Or you may even have a couple of days where you just want time off from cleaning.
My past two days have been spent with my kids running around a neighboring town, getting things done, shopping, and just spending time together. So of course my house is a disaster. I am a believer that the kids come first and the house comes second. But now I am home and it is time to recover the house from the messy monster. So, here is the Before:

Embarrassing!
For not being home much, it certainly added up fast. Fortunately, it didn't take take long to restore my house to a respectable amount of cleanliness. Check out the After:

Ahh, yes, now this is more like it. Back to normal. It always feels good to have my home clean. Now I can relax!!

Repurposing Over-Ripe Apples

Do you have some apples that are going to waste? Here is a great way to use them up and make your house smell fantastic in the process.

Take one apple and slice it up, core and all. Throw it in a sauce pan with about two cups of water. Add a teaspoon of cloves and/or about five to ten drops of clove essential oil, and a stick or two of cinnamon. You may also throw in some orange peel. Now put it on the back burner of your stove at a very low setting and slowly simmer it all day. You may have to add a bit of water here and there throughout the day and it should never be left completely unsupervised. You may also use a small crock-pot or electric candle warmer.

There you have it! No chemicals or candles, just natural delicious smells filling your home.

Children should be supervised by a responsible adult while making this.

Mean Mom: Why I took away my son's Electronics

Yes, I did! I took away the electronic tablets. E-Readers and tablets are great tools, this I cannot deny. In the hands of a child, however, they can be a tool that holds them back from true learning. Let me explain.

My son had a Kindle. It was meant to help him learn to read and to help him improve his movement skills. It definitely did help with the movement skills and a little with the reading. The problem is that when he used the it, I found that his attitude changed. He became increasingly agitated with it and also with the people around him. He became withdrawn and the more immersed he became in it the less responsive he was to the outside world. My son stopped learning how to interact with people and even reversed his ability to do that some. Over the summer, as he used it even more and the competition of school was removed, trips to the park and playing with friends or even his own father became battles over whether or not the Kindle would come with. Fortunately, it died but the Nook soon took it's place.

There really are few things more disturbing to me than a bunch of little kids sitting at the park playing with their electronic devices. They should be running, playing, and having fun interacting with things and other kids. This is very important to their social development. I think my son's social development actually took a step back. Kids would want him to play but he was too busy on that electronic device to care. One of the scary things that I witnessed was that when he actually did play on the playground, it was usually alone because he didn't know how to play with other kids.

When I look at the world today and see all of the kids getting into trouble, getting killed, or killing others it is frightening. Social media, certain movies, or videos aren't meant for kids and if left to their own devices the children will flock to them. They will become disengaged from the world and because it is over the computer they will not learn the consequences of their actions until that horrible moment when they exercise what they have learned on the computer into real life. It is important to be there for them to explain the difference between right and wrong. We can't let a computer raise our kids. There isn't a single thing more important that I can think of than raising our kids to be good people.

Yes it is convenient to let them use electronics for parents at times. I know I was able to get a lot more things done because, for the most part, he was quiet and busy. But when a child, or an adult for that matter, sits in front of a device all the time they become withdrawn, antisocial, and they forget that there are other things in life. Important things that will make or break their future. Talking to people, learning to properly communicate what you want or need to others, and learning how to work with others are valuable tools for growing into a responsible adult. Granted, children don't have that insight into the future that we do. It is our responsibility as parents to help them see it.

So yesterday, after I witnessed my son treating his father with an extreme amount of disrespect, because the rule was when his dad came to visit the Nook was turned off, I took it away. I did not do it without explanation. I told him that I believe that has become to distant from the things around him. And I also told him that I believe that he needed to learn how to interact with people and play. That I wanted him to grow up into a respectful caring young man and that I love him enough to know when he needs my help in making sure that happened.

Since I took it away, he has been more respectful, helpful, playful, and most importantly, HAPPY! This is not to say that he will never use the Nook again. It is only allowed on car trips and only for a few select, Mother approved, games. Absolutely NO INTERNET! It will be in extreme moderation.

He will learn so much more of life now. And, yes it certainly has been a learning experience for me too!

Making Sense Out Of Chaos!

Please tell me that I am not the only one that has a desk that sometimes turns into this! Folded laundry not yet put away. Socks waiting to be matched! Child's homework along with the news paper, magazines, and mail that have yet to be read. One empty water bottle, glue gun (from projects), a scrunchy, sunglasses, keys, empty dry fruit package, and various other objects discarded on my desk. It is complete chaos and trying to do anything that requires concentration is out of the question. For me, things feel out of control when my desk is like this. No these aren't staged photos, it is the current state of my desk!

Embarrassing! It is no wonder why it is so hard to get anything done. Lost bills, homework, or other important papers can bring unneed stress. Lost keys or sunglasses can be time consuming to find. Clutter has a tendency to breed more clutter until it literally takes over one's life.

Everything needs a place and the things that don't belong here shouldn't be here. These pictures serve to outline how important it is to your productivity and mental clarity that things be put in their proper place and that organization is maintained daily. More often than not, when my desk gets like this (usually on the weekends), I find that nothing gets finished or sometimes even started. The cleaner the surroundings, the better that I can give each of my duties their proper attention. It isn't always easy, but the more it gets done, the easier it gets. Then, and only then, do I feel calm and centered.

Fortunately, this story has a happy ending. Is it perfect? Of course not, nor am I. But everything has a place. When I need to get to the planners to do the bills, I know exactly where they are. Magazines are stacked neatly so that when time permits they are easily accessible. Sunglasses and keys are where they can be found at a moments notice. Most importantly, when I sit at the desk I can feel productive and clear minded just by making sense out of the chaos!
