New House Tour and Cleaning

As some of you may know, I recently moved to a new and smaller house. It's always fun getting to decorate a new place and put your own personal touches on it.

Unfortunately, the new place not only needed decorating but a good cleaning. Smaller spaces, turns out, are easier to mess up. Who knew? So here is a brief tour of the kitchen and living room before and after mess. Enjoy!

On This Christmas Holiday...

On this Christmas holiday:

 -Love.
-Be giving.
-Be humble.
-Be grateful.
-Love one another.
-Please, be safe in your travels.
-Spend time with family and friends.
-Remember the reason for the season.
-Remember those less fortunate than you.
-Remember our military personnel that cannot come home for Christmas.
-Remember Christmas's past with loved ones that are no longer with us.
-Look into the eyes of a child on Christmas morning and remember your childhood.
-Love.

Everything should begin and end with love. Merry Christmas!!

Coffee Chat: Coffee

Oh, how I love my morning coffee! Most people assume that coffee drinkers need the caffeine in the morning and this is why we head for the coffee maker first thing. I do not deny that for some this very well may be true. For me, however, it is the warmth and familiarity that I look forward to waking up to, along with the smell.

I admit to the addiction. I don't get cranky without my morning cup of joe but do feel like something is missing or that my morning isn't complete without it. Strange? Yes. Coffee is like a good friend that I have a conversation with every morning. No, I don't sit there at my desk and talk to a cup of steaming hot brown liquid, but thoughts come to me. At times creativity is born from my cup. I can relax and think how I need to orchestrate my day to get the maximum productivity out of it.

Often, during the early morning hours, I write a blog or fill out my planner, make a list, remember things from the previous day that I need to finish or appointments that need to be kept. My coffee drinking time is the time that I slow down and actually plan things before the chaos of the day begins and everything else is forgotten. It is viewed as a tool that allows me to open my mind and spill out all the nonsense and sensible things so that it can be prioritized. I guess that might make me seem a little flaky. Whatever it takes to get the job done is what will be done including relaxing in the morning with a steaming hot cup of brown liquidy heaven.

Moving!

How fun is moving? NOT! It is not fun at all. As a matter of fact, I absolutely detest it. But alas it is time to move on from this little house that we have grown to know and love to better and more economical things. The thought of packing, however, turns my stomach into a raging monster and overwhelms my brain like nothing else can.

First, comes the packing, assuming you can find boxes. Then, comes the cleaning. Of course, the moving comes next along with more cleaning and finally, the unpacking and disposing of the previously mentioned boxes. I am one of those people that can't live in a place with boxes in it so, everything will have to be put away before I can relax into the new place. It's craziness!

Yes, there is the initial excitement of the possibilities of the new place. Believe me, it is there for me. I can't wait to decorate and make it my own. Making sure everything has its own place and compliments the home is fun to me, but it can still be very overwhelming.

Also, I have to make sure that my son is comfortable in the new place and that he has a space that he can relax and enjoy. Change can be hard for kids and though I believe this move will help him more than hurt him, he is not so sure. We have been in this house for nearly eight years so he has spent the majority of his little life here. I can only imagine how daunting a move must be for him. But fortunately, he will be in the same school district which may alleviate some of the anxiety about the move and he will live closer to his best friend.

All in all, I think this is a great move for us. Time will tell. But for now, I have to pack all these boxes. GRRRR!

My New Hobby

I have many hobbies. They include reading, researching, writing, watching sports of any kind, and collecting old books, to name a few. One of my newest hobbies, however, is metal detecting.

I absolutely love metal detecting. Granted it has been restricted to my back yard, but you would be surprised to discover what lies under the layers of grass and soil that was left by those who came before us. No I haven't found any coin caches or diamond rings, but I have found a few old coins and various pieces of pottery. I have even found a few of my son's toy cars that he has lost outside over the past eight years. Being a lover of all things old and historical, this is absolutely one of the most fascinating activities that I have found.

Thanks to a very friendly and hard working mailman who delivers to my house and listened to endless stories from my son on the YouTube videos that we watch about metal detecting, we own a Bounty Hunter Quick Silver metal detector. Not the most expensive machine ever built nor the most powerful. It is perfect for beginners such as my son and I. He also threw in a pin-pointer to help us on our detecting journey and also took time on a Saturday afternoon, after he was done with a full day's work, to give us instruction on it's use. Awesome huh?

Here are a few of the relics from my back yard.

Don't ask me what any of this is.

I found a  few dimes and pennies. The penny separated from the rest is a 1944 Wheat Penny.

My son and I have gone out twice and my boyfriend and I have gone out once to detect the yard. I have a few permissions, because you should always get permission first, to detect a friend's yard which is two acres and my sister's yard which is three acres. Also, you should keep in mind that there are laws about when and where you can detect when on public land. Check with the local DNR division.

I have had a lot of fun with my detector so far. Get one for yourself and see how much history you can dig up, just make sure you fill in the hole afterwards!

Coffee Chat: Making A List, Checking It Twice

No, Santa isn't coming to town quite yet. I'm just getting organized by making my list. Okay, I make them daily. It is the one way that I can make sure that I get everything done in the day that needs to be done. List making helps me to lay things out on paper that are stuck in my brain so that I can sleep at night without thinking about them. Sounds a little nutty, I know.

I make lists about things that need to be done during the day, long term goals, short term goals, groceries, bills, YouTube and blog things I need or want tot watch or read, or subjects I would like to blog or YouTube about, and much much more. Crossing things off the list is extremely satisfying because it means that things are getting accomplished and I'm being productive. There is nothing more motivating than crossing a bunch of "To Do"'s off of a well organized list. The biggest thrill is when the whole list is finished, this is rarely done in a day.

There are more of you list makers out there, don't be shy. Making list is a great organizing tool. It can keep you on task and at the end of the day, if you haven't finished the list, you can always pick up where you left off or add the remains to another list. Either way you should feel proud of yourself because you have taken another step forward to getting yourself organized. Great Job!

Top Eleven Things To Do Now That The Kids Are In School

No doubt we all love our kids and we loved spending time with them during Summer vacation. The camping, swimming, playing, and family get together's were a blast. But as the end of Summer draws near it is back to school time. The parents that have sent their kids back to school may have a bit of spare time on their hands, if they don't already have a job outside the home. So for all of the stay home moms and dads, here is my Top Eleven Things To Do Now That The Kids Are In School.

  1. Catch up on some reading that you haven't had time for before. I don't know about you but I have a stack of books that I have been putting off reading because I simply didn't have time.
  2. Time to finally start that exercise program you have been procrastinating, using the kids as an excuse. I'm guilty of this one. Get a gym membership and actually use it. Just go for a walk, enjoy nature.
  3. Go back to school. Always wanted to take some courses but haven't had a moment to yourself? Some of them are even online which makes it much more convenient. Just do it!
  4. Finally find that job you have been wanting for some extra cash. We all need the extra money to saving up for nest Summer's activities.
  5. You can finally have that lunch date with your friends that you have been talking about all summer. Go ahead, call them.
  6. Spend some time with elderly family members. Take mom out to lunch or go see relatives that can't get out. They will appreciate the company.
  7. Volunteer somewhere. There are lots of hospitals, nursing or retirement facilities, schools, and daycare that can use the help.
  8. Rearrange your furniture. I know from experience, this is easier to do when my son is at school.
  9. Clean the house. This is the perfect moment to deep clean the house. No distractions. You can even clean the kids rooms without having to battle the kids. Time to get rid of things.
  10. Time to catch up on all those shows you have been wanting to watch instead of watching cartoons all day.
  11. Last but certainly the best, relax and take a nap. Catch up on the sleep that you have been lacking. Take advantage of the silence. Make sure you wake up in time to go pick up the kids from school!

Back To School, Don't Pass That School Bus!!!

Time flies when you are raising kids. I don't think, for parents, there has ever been a more true statement. My son just turned ten years old yesterday and I can't believe how much it feels like just yesterday we were at the hospital celebrating his arrival.

Through all the sleepless nights, early mornings, diapers, bottles, tummy aches, and school mornings one thing is certain. Kids grow like wildfire and it can't be stopped. I have two amazing  twenty something daughters and an equally amazing ten year old little boy. I wouldn't trade them for anything.

This school season and every school season, please remember to stop for school buses dropping off children. Don't pass them. When you are in the opposite lane, watch for the stop sign on the side of the bus and stop! It is the law! Save the life of a child and pass on the message.

Breakfast In Bed

My son made me breakfast in bed! Peanut butter and jelly sandwich. He did a great job and even wrote "for mom" on the package so I would know it was mine.

It is the little things like this that are actually the big things. I love parenting!! Kids have a beautiful innocents about them. It is so rewarding to see them grow up as fine young men and women. Every tough, sad, happy, emotional, challenging moment with them is worth it.

Sick of Trump and Clinton? Watch the Olympics for a while!!

Escaping the mud slinging of the political mess of Clinton and Trump by burying myself in the joy and hope of the 2016 Rio Olympics!
What a beautiful celebration of the human spirit! I love the Olympics, mainly because I am a sports fiend, but also because in spite of all of the things that separate us in this world, we are all from the human race and this is our time to come together to celebrate it. Let me take this time to thank all of those from around the world that view my blog. You are all amazing! Peace and love!! The Olympics will remind you that we can come together as a country and as the human race!

An Easy Snack Using Unconventional Ingredients

Being a single mom, sometimes the budget is so tight it squeaks, so I have to come up with new ways to use the foods that I have at home. Jumping into the car and heading to Walmart is not always possible, but I can shop in my own cupboards. Here is an affordable easy snack using an unconventional ingredient. Best of all, it requires no cooking and my son likes it!

Cheesy Herb Crackers

1 full package Oyster Crackers
5-6 tablespoons Olive Oil
1 Seasoning Packet from PASTA RONI (Any Flavor)
Mrs Dash Table Blend seasoning to taste

In a bowl, add Olive Oil. Pour Oyster Crackers over Olive Oil and mix with hands or spoon till all the crackers are coated lightly with oil. Add Seasoning Packet and stir till the powder coats the crackers. Sprinkle in Mrs Dash to taste. Enjoy!!

For different flavors, I have used the seasoning packets from Hamburger Helper, Hidden Valley Ranch, Kraft Mac and Cheese, and Suddenly Salad as well.

On The Daily Walk

Hanging with the bumblebees! On the daily walk!
These guys let me hang out with them. I don't bother them, they don't bother me. As many as 12 to 15 of them at a time are flying around me and never once have they come after me. They just go on their way doing what they do.

A Healthy Way To Start Your Morning

Here is another easy healthy solution to your rushed mornings!

My son enjoys these smoothies. I like to vary up the flavors of yogurt and the type of fruit blends so that he doesn't get bored with them. He doesn't even notice the kale.

Frozen Fruit and Kale Smoothie

1 Cup of Strawberry Yogurt
1 Cup of a Frozen Berry Blend
3/4 Cup of Soy Milk
1 Cup of Fresh Kale
1 Teaspoon of Ground Flax Seed

Add all ingredients to a blender. Blend until everything is smooth and well incorporated. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

Coffee Chat: Late Nights (The Sequel To Early Mornings)

I admit, I'm getting older and don't stay up as late as in my younger years. But late nights in summer are so relaxing. They can be the best part of the whole day.

There is absolutely nothing like sitting out on the back deck, winding down from a long day. The smell of the warm summer breeze and the feeling of it wafting over your skin is so relaxing. I love listening to the crickets play their music while the frogs throw in their harmony from the banks of the creek. Every once in a while and owl makes itself known from afar.

Just like in the Early Mornings, the world seems at peace except for the faint sound of a passing truck or car. The glow of the street lights reveals a sleepy little town where it almost seems like they have rolled up the streets after dark. The kids are asleep. Finally, there is a chance to take a deep breath and ponder the happenings of the day or plan the next.

If you have an outdoor fireplace or a fire pit, the gentle sounds of crackling can be heard. The smell of the burnt wood blows past you as it catches a ride on the breeze. Lone embers float up to the sky and burn themselves out as you watch while sipping a cool beverage.

Mmmm, Sun Tea! Slow brewed all day long.

I love summer nights in my gliding rocker on the deck. Start the mornings on the deck waking up with the sun and end the nights on the deck winding down from the day. Now that is the good life.

Detoxify Yourself From Media

Day after day it seems there is nothing but death, destruction, bitterness, and unhappiness flooding in on us from every direction. It is hard not to get discouraged. It is time for a wind down from the news of the day. To find away to relax and enjoy life.

To Follow Or Unfollow

One of the things that I did on Facebook was Unfollow. I Unfollowed news organizations, news papers, and even some of my friends. I know this sounds harsh, especially the friend part. Keep in mind that Unfollowing is not the same as Unfriending. Unfollowing only shuts down the feed that comes from them to your page. You still can be friends with them. You just don't have to see what they are talking about or posting all the time. If you change your mind and decide that you wish to see them on your feed you can always follow them again. It isn't permanent. I love my Facebook family and friends.

Why did I Unfollow these organizations and people? There are many organizations, especially the news, that nearly always only put negative things on their pages. If I am going to have a continuous feed on Facebook, it had better be the good and the bad. There are positive things that happen all of the time but they rarely make the news. I know I would like to hear or read them, wouldn't you?

As far as Unfollowing actual  friends or even family, the reason is clear. We all have those friends or family members that are never happy, it seems. Whether it is negative political talk or the constant posts of profanity, hate talk, dirty talk, or just plain constant talk about how the world is against them. Sometimes, if they have extreme views on things, it is an easy solution to keep in touch with them and preserve the relationship rather than removing them from your friends list.

Sometimes It Is Good Just To Detoxify Yourself From All Media

Another thing that I do on a regular basis is avoid the news for a few days at a time. There is nothing on there that I won't see in a few days. Not turning on the TV during news hours so that I can detoxify myself. Trust me when I tell you that it is nearly impossible to avoid the news completely because word of mouth, books, magazines, social media, and television are all around us. So unless we barricade ourselves in a cave somewhere away from everyone, which sounds nice at times, we will hear about it.

No, I don't bury my head in the sand. As a matter of fact, I like to keep informed and before I talk about something I like to research it to make sure that the information is correct. Eventually, I catch up on everything I have missed. But it is important not to let the negativity of the world take you down with it. Find a place and a way to recharge from it all.

The Book I Will Be Reading For A Year!

The current book that I am reading, I will be reading for a year. Seems like a long time to be reading one book right?

The book is The Intellectual Devotional: American History.  I chose history because I like history. However, there are several other subjects in this line of books as you will see by the link above. These are New York Times Bestsellers. Written by David S. Kidder and Noah D. Oppenheim. Obviously, there are several types of devotionals but this is the one I chose. I do have faith based ones as well.

It is a great book so far and keeps my mind sharp. There are times when I can't seem to remember anything, sometimes even simple words. My brain goes dumb on me and I feel like my mind is slipping. I have found that the best way to cure this for me is to actually read a book. It doesn't have to be long or even informative really. Even a romance novel, which I call 'no brain activity', ironically enough, because you know how they all end, will do. Reading a book stimulates my brain to wake it up. This combined with being active and getting fresh air are a great combination to keep things working right.

Not the book I'm reading but a very good alternative.

I have tried E-Readers, which are great, mind you. But for me, I need the stimulation of the senses as well. In other words, I need to hold the actual book in my hands, turn the pages, and feel the texture of them at my fingertips. I am also one of those strange people that likes the smell of books. I can't get that with and E-Reader. By engaging most of my senses, my mind is stimulated more and I tend to remember more of what I read. A daily devotional kind of book offers the opportunity to do this on a daily basis and a smaller scale, while learning a bit about history.

Coffee Chat: What Inspires You?

Basically, there are three things that inspire me or motivate me. God, my family, and nature are the forces that inspire me to take a step forward in life and to make life worth every breath. These are probably average, but for me they all have a different way of inspiring me.

God, first and foremost, inspires me to want to be a better person. He inspires me to want to give to others of myself, my resources, and my heart. He inspires me to live in service to others. This isn't about what religion I am, although that has huge impact on my life. It is about wanting to please Him, wanting to be closer to Him, and wanting to walk with Him.

My family are also a huge contributor to the inspiration and motivation factor. I want to do whatever I can for them and would be nothing without them. Though my siblings and I, there are six of us, may argue from time to time, I know they are always there for me. Having lost both of my parents who were the stability that made us close and taught us what it means to be a family, I am so glad to have brothers and sisters that I can count on. This being said, my motivation to make sure that they can count on me is very important. There will inevitably be hard times in which I will be present for support, love, encouragement, and just a listening ear.

My children are a very large factor in my inspiration and motivation. Teaching children to be the best people they can be, to love God and hold Him close, and to learn to be there for each other is so important these days. There are so many bad things going on in the world and I want them to know that not only do they have me but they have each other to lean on. From the youngest to the oldest they should know that their support to each other will be one of the most important and dear things they will need to get through life. Never forget your family.

There may be a lot of bad things going on in the world but there are magnificent things all around us. Beauty, peace, diversity, power, harmony, melody, and inspiration are all around us on a daily basis if we look outside of the "rat race", look to nature. Fantastic views of life and renewal of life fill the senses. I love nature, from the worst part of it to the best. There is beauty in even the most horrifying looking storm. Unfortunately, their can be destruction and loss of life which always pains me. It hurts my heart to see any living being suffer, including our planet. Those that have no respect for the beautiful world around us and it's diversity more than likely have little respect for anything. Those that hurt animals for sport or just plain entertainment likely have no respect for life in general. Nature inspires me to want to protect it and revel in it and to pass it on with respect to the next generation so that they may be inspired by it to. Pollution, deforestation, littering, and the destruction or killing of the wildlife hurts us all. Just because it isn't standing in front of you or you can't see it does not mean that it isn't happening. We all have a responsibility to be proactive in protecting and securing our future and I am not talking about money. Money has little use when you can't breath, eat, drink, and live.

What inspires you? Take time to think of the inspirations in your life and what they mean to you. Rediscover yourself and the meaning of the people and things around you.

Never Take Your Health For Granted

Every day that we walk around healthy is a gift but as we do this we tend to take for granted that we will always feel this way. Sometimes we even feel that others must be doing things wrong if they are not healthy. During my recent illness I began to appreciate those days when I felt great and everything in my life was normal. I had to do nothing wrong in order for my health to start slipping away.

In just nine weeks time, I was pale, began to feel weak and tired all the time. I desperately missed the days that I could stay awake all day long, walk up and downstairs without being exhausted, walk anywhere without feeling exhausted. I felt horrible that I couldn't spend time with my son. Hours felt like they were wasting away.

I learned how to stop the weakness eventually but not without taking a huge amount, or what I think is huge compared to normal, of Iron, Vitamin C, B Vitamin Complex, hormones, and drinking Powerade like it was going out of style to replenish the large amount of blood I was losing. Even with those efforts I could feel myself not being able to keep up with life.  I was diagnosed with Endometrial Hyperplasia with heavy bleeding and later found that there were noncancerous tumors in my uterus along with cysts on my ovaries.

Needless to say, when my doctor said full hysterectomy after nine weeks of what felt like torture, I was more than ready to get it done with. A day after the surgery and I was home recovering which brings it's own frustrations. Not being able to sleep on my right side, I'm a side sleeper. Not being able to do anything outside for fear of falling. I was and am on a ten pound weight restriction which doesn't sound bad until you want to mow, move furniture because it was spring cleanup week, carry in groceries (one bag at a time), or hold my son. Anything that required bending over, like cleaning or the dropsies (because I seem to have that issue at times) was a no go because of the feeling that my skin was ripping open.

Yes, it was a robotic surgery and yes, the recovery is a lot less than regular surgery but it is still surgery and there is still recovery time. The recovery just takes a lot less out of you and you don't have some massive wound to recover from. Just four small incisions with deep rooted stitches that feel like they pull.

Fortunately, I am recovering to the point where I can get things done like cleaning, picking things up (light things) and taking care of my son. I'm not hurting, actually after the first day home I required no pain medication at all. I can go for walks and haven't really felt weak since after the second week of recovery. I am still not allowed to mow or lift heavy things, though on occasion I have lifted some things, carefully and with assistance.

One thing is for sure, I no longer take my health for granted. After weeks of feeling like I was falling apart, there was no way my health was gonna be taken for granted. My son and I have great things planned for this summer some of which I plan to blog about.

A happy healthy life is nothing to sniff at. Don't take it for granted. Get regular checkups. Do self exams. Be proactive in your life. Don't put things off until your life is affected and you are in massive pain or are too weak to maintain your life. After all it is the only one you have and there are others counting on you to stick around. Do it for yourself, your family, and friends!

Coffee Chat: Recovering from surgery!

After a 9 week female health issue and a Hysterectomy, I am happy to say that I am recovering nicely from surgery.

It is, however, a maddeningly slow process even though the surgery was robotic. I do recommend the Da Vinci MIP Hysterectomy girls if you have the option. Takes far less recovery time. I was in the hospital for one night and out at noon the next day.

I am very sorry for the lapse in blog posts but it was necessary to my recovery. But now I am back at it so there are more posts to come. Thank you for your patience!

Some Of My All Time Favorite Products

Everyone has some favorite products that they use frequently and buy repeatedly. If you are like me though you are always searching for the right product that actually gets the job done. Here are a few products that have worked for me and are my "Go To's".

  1. Jergens Ultra Healing - This is a moisturizer made for extra dry skin that contains Vitamins C, E, & B5. For the longest time I was looking for a good moisturizer for my legs, heals, and feet because I hate the dry ashy look. My daughter introduced me to this formula and I have loved it ever since. It has improved the look of my skin dramatically.
  2. CoverGirl TruBlend Liquid Makeup in Natural Ivory - I love this stuff so much I can't even tell ya. Used to be that the only foundations that I could find that matched my skin tone wouldn't lay on my skin correctly. Made me crazy. Even with a proper moisturizer and a primer I couldn't find one that would stay on my skin and give me good flawless coverage without looking cakey or smearing but not setting. I was ecstatic to find this product. It goes on easy and doesn't take a ton of product to achieve the look I want.
  3. CoverGirl Lip Perfection Jumbo Gloss Balm in the shade 215 -  This product feels so good on my lips and looks natural. It is my favorite lip color by far and the one that I nearly always reach for. I'm no beauty guru and I don't wear a ton of make up because I like the "natural as possible" look. That being said, this balm is the perfect combination of sheer, moisturizing, and   color for me.
  4.  Coast To Coast Skin Radiance Aqua Mist with Quandong & Chamomile - I hate that dry rough scaly look on my face. I found that a great way to keep it moisturized is by using this mist after I moisturize and after I have been anywhere that dries out my skin. Nothing feels better than a cool refreshing spritz when your skin is tired and dried out. It brightens and refreshes my face while keeping it moisturized.
Now keep in mind that I am no pro in reviews or applying makeup. I get nothing from any of these companies for the review. I'm just an average girl on the search for products that work for me. Give these a shot and see if they work for you!
